An application has been made to make a sunken lane in Symondsbury open to all traffic.

Shute's Lane, near Colmers Hill, is known for its many inscribing's and the application is for where it meets Quarry Cross to the western road at Symondsbury village. The application states it has been submitted by Sarah Bucks of the British Horse Society, which has been contacted for a comment.

A byway open to all traffic gives a right for vehicular and all other traffic to use the lane, but is mainly used as a footpath and bridleway.

A spokesman for Dorset Council said: "We have received an application to add Shute's Lane, Symondsbury, to the Definitive Map of rights of way as a byway open to all traffic.

"Shute's Lane is currently recorded on the list of streets under the Highways Act (1980) as the D10721. This determines maintenance responsibility but does not define how the route can be used.

"The Definitive Map Modification Order application requires Dorset Council to determine the status of Shute's Lane, and if appropriate, record this status on the Definitive Map. The process will not change the public rights along Shute's Lane, it is simply a matter of recording what those rights are.

"It is likely to be some considerable time before the case comes under active consideration, but before the evidence is evaluated, a full public consultation will be carried out."

The application number is T619 and can be found here.
