There's something about the start of autumn that makes us want to press reset.

The evenings are getting darker, the mornings are a little cooler and suddenly the routines of summer feel like they belong to another year.

But autumn doesn't have to mean putting the brakes on and waiting for winter. It can be a great time to make a few small changes, get organised and find new ways to enjoy everyday life.

And the good news is, you don't need to completely reinvent your routine to feel the difference.

Clear out the things you no longer need

There's a reason decluttering feels so satisfying.

Whether it's a kitchen cupboard, wardrobe, garage or that drawer full of cables nobody knows the purpose of, getting rid of things you no longer use can make your home feel instantly more manageable.

You don't have to spend an entire weekend doing it either. Pick one small area and give yourself 20 minutes.

You might be surprised by how much you can get done.

Make your home a little cosier

As the temperature drops, we naturally start spending more time indoors.

That makes autumn the perfect excuse to make a few simple changes around the home. Dig out the blankets, move a lamp into a darker corner, bring out the candles or simply rearrange the furniture.

You don't need to spend a fortune, sometimes changing the lighting or adding a couple of small touches is enough to make a room feel completely different.

Rediscover your local area

Summer holidays might be over, but there's no reason the exploring has to stop.

Try visiting somewhere nearby that you've never properly explored. Find a new walking route, visit a local market, try an independent café or finally pop into that shop you've driven past for years.

You don't always have to travel far to feel like you've had a change of scenery.

And if you're heading further afield, autumn can be a lovely time for a weekend away, with cooler temperatures and plenty of opportunities to explore without trying to fit everything into one day.

Give your everyday journey a refresh

For many people, the daily journey to work or school is simply something to get through.

But changing a few small things can make it feel less repetitive.

Try a new podcast, create a new playlist or take a slightly different route when you have the time.

It's also worth giving your car a little attention as the seasons change. Checking your tyres, lights, wipers and screen wash can help you feel more prepared for the wetter and darker months ahead.

If your car is due some attention, booking a car service is another simple job worth getting out of the way before winter arrives.

Find something to look forward to

One of the easiest ways to make the darker months feel more positive is to have something in the diary.

It could be a meal with friends, a concert, a day trip, a football match, a weekend away or simply a Saturday morning coffee somewhere new.

It doesn't have to be a big event.

Having something small to look forward to can make an ordinary week feel a little more exciting.

Spend more time offline

Summer often gives us plenty of natural reasons to put our phones down, whether that's sitting outside, going away or simply spending more time with friends.

As the evenings get darker, it's easy to fall into the habit of scrolling for hours.

Try swapping some of that screen time for something else. Read a book, cook something from scratch, play a board game, go for a drive or simply have a proper conversation.

It sounds simple, but sometimes simple is exactly what we need.

Embrace the season rather than wishing it away

It's tempting to start counting down to Christmas as soon as September arrives.

But there's a lot to enjoy before then.

Crisp walks, changing leaves, cosy cafés, fresh food, darker evenings and those occasional bright autumn days when the sun still has a little warmth left.

You don't need to make huge changes to enjoy the season.

A few small resets, a little more time outside and something to look forward could be all it takes to make the next few months feel that bit better.

After all, autumn isn't just the end of summer.

It's a new season, and perhaps a good opportunity for a fresh start.
