Tributes have been paid to the "passionate" founder of Bridport-based Samways Fish Merchants.

Clifford Samways died peacefully at home on July 7, aged 88.

The Samways family is asking for people's memories of Clifford, and at the same raising money for the family's chosen charity, the RNLI.

The family said: "Clifford was an important part of Samways Fish Merchants and a much-loved member of the Samways family.

"As our founder, we have always been proud to promote Clifford's humble beginnings as a fisherman selling his catch to fish merchants and we are extremely grateful to Clifford for laying the foundations of the company that we have today.

"Over the many years of his involvement with the business he made many friends across the industry and was a passionate supporter of the UK fishing fleet, which is a mindset that will always remain strong within the business.

"In later life, Clifford returned to being a fisherman, landing out of West Bay and it was one of his many loves to be out on the water. It was during that period that Clifford had a boat called 'Mavis', so that when his wife, Angie, went to look after the horse by the same name, Clifford could go and see his own Mavis.

"It is memories like these that we will cherish and we hope that you will all have your own stories to share, so it would mean a lot to hear them."

A service to celebrate Clifford's life will be held at St Mary's Church on Thursday, July 22 at 1pm. There will also be time to pay respects to Clifford as he goes to Weymouth Crematorium via West Bay on Tuesday, July 20 at 12.45pm.

Memories, tributes and donations can be left here.
