There has been an overwhelming response to calls for donations to be sent to the people of Ukraine - with a telephone box being filled with items three times over.

Bridport residents have been organising collection points in the town - which include the telephone box in South Street opposite Soulshine, Bridport Music Centre and Opal in South Street - for much-needed items to be sent to the Ukraine border.

Jane Wain, of Bridport Music Centre, said: "It has restored my faith in humanity, people are coming in and out and some are so upset by it.

"We're using a company called Help from Bournemouth to Ukraine, it is a drop off point in Bournemouth which started in a little corner shop in Boscombe. It is a Polish group and it has done so well that Castlepoint [shopping centre] in Bournemouth has donated the empty Argos for them to use, which means it can be an ongoing thing, people can keep bringing donations and we can keep taking it to Bournemouth.

"The response has been wonderful, really good. I have been to see Dawn at Opal and her shop is full, my shop is full, the phone box is full."

Donations they are in need of are baby items - wipes, formula, nappies, dummies, Sudo-type creams, bottled, shampoo and washing gels, toothpaste and toothbrushes for children - antibacterial gels, sanitary items, non-aerosol deodorants, adult toiletries - soaps, shower gels, hair brushes and toothbrushes.

Items such as sleeping bags, warm, thermal clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, tents, dry instant food and gloves are also welcome.

Donations can be dropped off at Bridport Music Centre from 10am to 1pm Monday to Friday, Opal in South Street and at the telephone box.
