Theft of Christmas tree will not detract from the community spirit it brought and money raised for food bank

A community Christmas tree in the town centre raised £300 before it was stolen yesterday (Sunday) - but the "mindless act" will not detract from what the Christmas tree brought to Bridport.

The team behind Dark Bear Bar wanted to spread some Christmas cheer and raise money for Bridport's Cupboard Love Food Bank and, working with Bridget's Market and Footeprints, put a Christmas tree in the planter outside Waitrose.

Children were encouraged to decorate the tree and many went to put their mark on it - including an Aquaman figurine as the star of the show.

Lloyd Brown, of Dark Bear Bar, said: "Sadly, our community Christmas tree in aid of the Bridport food bank was stolen yesterday.

"It raised £300, as well as many of you lovely lot donating cans via Waitrose.

"We've found a few of the ornaments that the thieves left behind, so if you'd like to claim yours, please send us a message [on Facebook].

"This mindless act doesn't detract from how everyone in the community came together and raised some money for a good cause and a great festive cheer with the quirky and fun decorations.

"Hope you are all having a great festive period and we look forward to hopefully seeing some of you for our doorstep cocktail drops on the 31st."

Dark Bear is offering a New Year's Day brunch pack to help those nursing a sore head the morning after. Order by 2pm on December 30 for delivery on New Year's Eve. Find out more about the pack and the other cocktails available at the online shop
