An extension for Beaminster Fire Station will give police officers sharing the building a room of their own.

Dorset Council's Area Planning Committee unanimously approved the 37 square metre side extension to the station, together with the creation of two parking spaces.

Councillors were told that the extension to the Clay Lane building had only come before the committee because Dorset Council owns a small section of the land, otherwise it would have likely been approved by officers.

The application said that the extension will provide dedicated firefighter and police facilities made up of an office, lecture room and a small kitchen area.

Building materials being proposed will match the existing fire station with the windows fitted with mirror film to prevent people looking in.

The two parking spaces will be created to the western edge of the site, next to the existing access into the rear yard from Hogshill Mead.

Support for the application had come from Beaminster Town Council with no public comments received.

The town council noted in its submission that there is currently no indication of police presence in the building, suggesting this could be addressed as part of the re-development.
