Bridport's annual carnival week will get underway this weekend, with a programme of events for all the family culminating in the grand carnival and torchlight processions.

Events will start with the popular darts tournament to be held from 7pm on Saturday, August 12 at The Beehive - home of Bridport Football Club. There will be competitions for both men and women in teams of three.

On Sunday, August 13, Bridport will host its first teddy bear's picnic at the Millennium Green from 11am to 3pm. Bring along your favourite teddy and enjoy the refreshments, community stalls, fun games and competitions.

This event will also include the official crowning of this year's carnival royal party – princess Millie Frampton and attendants Delilah Rayner and Ava Hook – at 12noon.

A carnival quiz will be held on Tuesday, August 15 at The Ropemakers with teams of four welcome to enter, and on Wednesday, August 16 The Beehive will host family bingo.

The grand carnival procession will be held on Saturday, August 19, making its way through the town centre from West Street, from 7pm, followed by dancing in South Street to local band Mid-Life Crisis.

All local clubs, organisations and businesses are encouraged to enter this year's procession, with prizes in a number of categories up for grabs. Entry is free and you can find more details at https://bridportcarnival.co.uk/carnival-entry-form/

A crabbing competition in association with West Bay Sea Angling Club will be held on Sunday, August 20, from 11am to 2pm, with registration from 10.45am at the Angling Centre. Entry costs £2 with prizes for the heaviest crabs in two age groups, plus a trophy for the overall winner.

Carnival week will be rounded off with the annual torchlight procession on Sunday, August 20. Torches will be available to purchase in Bucky Doo Square from 6.30pm before the procession sets off at 9pm, led by the Mayor of Bridport, Cllr Dave Bolwell.

The procession will slowly snake its way to West Bay, where the torches are thrown onto the bonfire, and people celebrate with a drink. Popular local band The Skalatans will keep the mood going until about 10.pm when a spectacular fireworks display will bring the week to its grand finale.
