Retired nurses from Bridport Community Hospital recently completed the London Marathon raising £4,500 for charity.

Patrick and Janet Letherby ran together for 26.2 miles to finish their London Marathon journey raising money for their charities Alzheimer's Society and Multiple Sclerosis UK.

On the experience, they said: "It was a gruelling and emotional run, but at the same time it was an amazing experience being cheered on all the way by the crowd, family and friends. We were running for Janet's mum who is in the late stages of Alzheimer's and to raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis."

They started their marathon challenge a year ago with a couch to 5km and continued with the London Marathon training programmes. They ran four times a week around Bridport and the Dorset countryside. During the summer hot weather, they started their runs at 6:30am to avoid the effects of the heat but were rewarded with some fantastic sunrises. The pair also lost three stone between them.

They achieved their fundraising amount through numerous car boot and online sales, cake and craft stalls alongside generous donations from family and friends. They also issued a special mention to local businesses for their support, Hallmark Windows, Boilerman and Palmers Brewery.
