Ahead of the final regatta in the 2022 Jurassic League tomorrow (Saturday) at Lyme Regis, the Bridport Gig Rowing Club (BGRC) has been busy competing.

The Rame Gig Club Regatta on the Rame Peninsula was held off Cawsand Beach on July 13.

This year, 24 gig clubs too part, including one from Kent.

A spokesman for BGRC said: "Cawsand is a tiny beach at the bottom of a hill, only wide enough for one trailer at a time - getting the gigs on and off the beach was a major operation in itself. A good humoured one - for the most part."

Twenty-seven BGRC squad members took part, between them competing in a total of nine races. Some rowed in two races, whilst a few brave ones managed three - even rowing back to back races when the schedule demanded it.

The spokesman added: "The results for our Dorset club were excellent - competing with the mighty Cornish gig clubs is always a challenge, but one not to be missed.

"David Lohfink the BGRC rowing captain finished the day impressed by the sterling efforts and achievements made by everyone taking part and excited at what this level of fitness suggested for the remainder of the season."

The BGRC results were:

Mens Vets 4th, Mens Super Vets 7th, Ladies A 8th, Ladies Vets 9th, Ladies Super Vets 4th, Mixed 7th

The spokesman said: "As a club, the commitment of the various members of the squad, captains and coxes and those towing, driving and camping on behalf of the club to make these events achievable is not to be under estimated. A lot of work takes place all through the year, input that most of us turning up to row simply never see.

"Thank you all."

The penultimate race in the 2022 Jurassic League took place on July 20 at Langstone.

The spokesman added: "What a storm of activity. Passion and technique combined to create something memorable. BGRC definitely did 'burn water'. Leaping ahead to claim second place in the league behind Langstone, who had themselves rowed outstandingly at the Bridport Regatta earlier in the month."

The results for BGRC were:

Ladies A 1st, Ladies B 2nd, Ladies Vets 4th, Ladies Super Vets 1st, Mens A 2nd, Mens B 2nd, Mens Vets 1st, Mens Super Vets 3rd, Mixed 1st

The spokesman said: "The comment made by one squad captain was, 'the more races they rowed, the better they performed'. Well done everyone.

"The final regatta in the 2022 Jurassic League takes place at Lyme Regis on Saturday, August 13. Racing starts at 9.30am.

"We hope that you will all decide to come down to Lyme Cobb and cheer for the BGRC squad rowing in Brydian - one of the wooden boats from the Bridport Gig Rowing Club - on to success."
