Bridport walk of the week: Challenging Chideock route on Quarry Hill

We have introduced a walk of the week for our newsletter subscribers to enjoy over the weekend.
Each Friday we will be sharing a circular walk in and around our local area with directions and photos. We use the OS Map app, which is very useful if you are out walking.
This week's walk is a three-mile route in Quarry Hill in Chideock, taking in views of the Colmer's Hill and the coast. It takes around one hour 45 minutes but was quite difficult, with very steep inclines in places. At some points the paths were not completely obvious, so we highly recommend you taking a map or using the OS Map app.
Start in Chideock car park by the Londis shop and cross the A35, turning right to walk towards Bridport. Where the pavement stops, turn left up the footpath and follow the path round to the right towards a barn. Go past it and follow the path round to the left going uphill.
Go over the stile and follow the path uphill through the field to a stile at the top, go over that and the next stile just to the right, walking uphill again to a third stile. After going over the third stile follow the path to the left. There is a track in the grass - you can follow that and when you get to the end of the field, turn right to go up the hill but it is very steep - or you can gradually climb the hill while walking to the left, going round the trees at the top of the hill.
If you follow the path, part way up the very steep side of the hill is a path among trees on your left, before the trees in the top of the hill. It is not completely clear so keep an eye out. If you go up gradually, just be aware you are heading for trees on the side of the hill and not aiming for those on top of the hill.
When you have found the footpath, go down the steps and over the stile and into the next field, continuing straight to the very end of the field. Go through the gate on your left and you will arrive at a crossways. Turn right to take the path going back on yourself. Shortly after where the path splits in two, take the right-hand path, going up past a gate and Colmer's Hill. The path can be quite muddy.
Continue following the path and it will come out onto a lane. Continue straight until a grassy track appears going back on yourself on your right, opposite a wooden gate. Go up it and go through the metal gate, following the path up the hill to the left.
Keep following the path and you will begin to see mounds at the top of the hill. Follow the path in the grass around to the right and round to the right again, following the faint path in the grass and it will start to go around to the left as you see Colmer's Hill on your right.
You will see the brow of the hill ahead with a footpath hollowed out in it. You do not want to go straight, you want to go left where you can see the tops of some trees. The path is not clear here, but walk towards the trees in the direction of Thorncombe Woods and Golden Cap.
As you reach the trees, the path becomes clearer and takes you to the left. Follow this path until it comes to a wooden gate where the fence is currently broken and walk through to the next field towards a metal gate at the bottom.
Go through it and walk along the grassy path between two fields and you will be back at the three stiles near the beginning of the walk. Go over the stile on your left and go down the first field you came up earlier. Follow the route back to the A35 and turn right to go back to the car park.
This walk is just a suggestion, you can of course take any different routes you wish to make it more direct or make it longer. Always take extra care where the ground is uneven or wet.
Please leave gates as you find them - if you opened it, close it.
Please keep dogs on leads around livestock.
