It may be the shortest day of the year and the official first day of winter, but days will only get brighter from here.

Many travel to Stonehenge to celebrate the Winter Solstice, as it is thought the stones were carefully placed to frame the sunset on the shortest day.

Winter Solstice means the earth's northern hemisphere is tilted as far away from the sun as possible, and that half of the planet will see the shortest hours of sunlight and the longest hours of the year.

Although it is considered the first day of the winter season, it is also known as midwinter because the days start to get longer and the countdown to spring begins.

So, while the sunset has been around 4.10pm and the sunrise at 8.10am, this will gradually get later and earlier respectively, bringing back more daylight hours!
