Community stalls, music and dancing will fill the streets of Bridport this weekend for the revitalised Charter Fair.

The free event will be held on Saturday, May 20 from 9.30am, with more than 40 stalls at Millennium Green and entertainment from an array of talented performers, including Trumbonium, Local Vocal, Wyld Morris, Bridport Young Performers, Bridport Musical Theatre, Phoenix Youth Band, and Bridport's Ukrainian Choir.

Proceedings will start with maypole dancing on the green with the Lyric School of Dance, followed by the crowning of the May Queen.

This is turn is followed by the presentation of two annual awards for outstanding service to the community – the Above and Beyond Award for an individual will be presented to Dr Jo Millar for her work with the Living Tree Cancer Support Group, whilst Jim and Jenny Tigg will receive the Charter Fair Trophy for their work in organising and providing support for refugees in the community.

The children's area, provided by Bridport Young Performers, will include face painting and, for the first time, Oops Wow Messy Art with local artist Jo Burlington.

The bar will be provided by the Jurassic Fields festival, and further refreshments by Brit Valley Rotary Club.

With this event now attracting more support than ever, there will also be stalls and free entertainment in Bucky Doo Square, starting at 10am with The Big Band, and followed by Bridport Choral Society, Shiraz, and Rough Assembly.

The Bridport Community Charter Fair is a partnership between The Charter Fair, Bridport Town Council and Bridport Community Fair. Sponsorship has come from the Rex Trevett Fund, long-time supporter Linda Larcombe, and from McCarthy Stone Retirement Properties.

Nicki Beswarick, divisional marketing manager, said: "At McCarthy Stone we aim to support initiatives in the towns and communities in which we build that will help to create a lasting, positive legacy, such as the Bridport Community Charter Fair.

"It is our pleasure to support this brilliant work within the local community."

The fair is timed to coincide with the national Love Your Local Market event, and market stallholders will be starting their monthly Bridport Colour Walk on Saturday.

As one stall-holder said: "We look forward to meeting you on the streets of Bridport, wearing your most colourful clothes, a whole outfit, or just a scarf. Wear, walk, chat, laugh! You're all welcome."

More information is available from [email protected] or [email protected] with programmes now available at the Tourist Information Centre and on the day at Millennium Green and Bucky Doo Square.
