A café owner wants to bring something completely different to the town from next week.

Mike Reid will transform the Green Yard Café in Barrack Street into a restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights, offering a range of Caribbean dishes.

He said: "I wanted to do something completely different. Chips, burgers, pizzas - you can get all that in Bridport and I don't need to be in competition with anyone.

"I've been here for five years and Bridport to me - people have always told me - is a very foodie place. I think there's always room for diversity and cultural food.

"Coming from Bristol, you can find a whole street with all different foods - Polish food and Russian food to Indian food and Chinese food, you name it, it will be all on one street.

"I want to bring something different and for others to think, 'that's a good idea', and offer another sort of food.

"I have always intended to do evenings, but you do six days a week and realise your only day off is Sunday and that Sunday is spent getting things ready to open on Monday. But we've decided to do from Tuesday to Saturday now.

"We will still be a café during the day, just a restaurant on Friday and Saturday evenings."

Dishes on the menu include goat curry, jerk chicken, spicy vegan curry, papaya salad, Cuban sandwich, jerk jackfruit burger and more, as well as a selection of Caribbean inspired sweet treats.

Mike added: "We wanted to keep it simple - we don't want 15 main meals on there and it all be frozen in the freezer.

"The idea of it is to bring something different to Bridport and see how it goes from there. I'm hoping it will go well. I want to do it purely for the love of it."

Mike also has a brand-new mural in the café's courtyard to go alongside the Caribbean evenings. Painted by Stu Art and Gillian Payne, it adds a lot of colour and brightens the space.

Mike said: "They are both credited artists in Bristol and have had pieces shown in Tate Modern. They will also be doing exhibitions here.

"I wanted to incorporate something like the Bristol Balloon Fiesta and Colmer's Hill, because they are personal to me, and to show a bit of diversity between the two pictures. It's a mini, visual display to show how diverse we can be."

Food will be served between 6pm and 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights from May 21, with last orders at 9.30pm. The café has an alcohol licence and Mike will be providing a greater variety of alcohol.
