After winning gold, West Bay Discovery Centre is receiving national recognition.

The centre picked up gold in the Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable category at the South West Tourism Awards after receiving gold in the same category in the Dorset Tourism Awards, as well as bronze in Small Visitor Attraction of the Year.

It has now been chosen to go forward to the Visit England national tourism award finals and stands to win gold, silver or bronze in Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Business category.

The other finalists in this category include Chichester Festival Theatre in West Sussex and Pure Outdoor in Derbyshire.

Discovery centre trustee John West said: "We are stunned by this further achievement as we thought our success at the South West awards was the summit of our achievements, but national recognition is beyond our expectations and a very pleasant surprise."

John added: "Care for the environment and promoting sustainability is central to what we do. We aim to have a low impact on the environment by recycling our waste, buying sustainable and locally produced merchandise wherever possible and promoting local beach cleans.

"We have interactive displays showing how we can all reduce our carbon footprint and lessen the impact of climate change. We are also a Bridport Plastic Free business champion."

The discovery centre is run by local charity the Bridport Area Development Trust, and is open from Tuesday to Sunday.

New volunteers are always welcome and for more information, visit the centre or email [email protected]
