Residents in Bridport are enjoying a new wheelchair swing, thanks to funds from West Dorset Mencap.

The charity replaced the swing for Encompass, a charity specialising in learning disability, autism and mental health support provider for adults and young people.

Linda Simpson, West Dorset Mencap chairman, said: "We were delighted to fund this much needed piece of equipment. All profits raised by our charity shop in Bridport are used to support people who live with a learning disability in West Dorset.

"Although we are affiliated to Mencap, West Dorset Mencap is an independent charity and 100 per cent of our profits are used to support people living locally.

"Thank you to everyone who continues to support our shop in East Street and enable us to raise much needed funds for our community."

The swing is already proving to be an invaluable asset.

Lisa, Encompass service team leader, said: "As well as being a fun experience, having the wind blow in your face and the feeling of freedom, the back and forth motion can help calm someone who is anxious, offering them a safe release.

"Being outside improves a person's overall mood and wellbeing and the swing encourages people to go outside, but it can also help with gross motor skills, including balance and coordination.

"The swing is used almost every day and I am sure it will continue to for many years to come."

Tracey Dennis-Andrews, operations business partner at Encompass, added: "We are thrilled that West Dorset Mencap has kindly donated a brand-new replacement swing.

"The swing is fully accessible, and we are really pleased that people Encompass support in this area can continue to enjoy the garden swing at our service in Bridport.

"We have enjoyed a collaborative, charitable and professional relationship with the team at West Dorset Mencap for many years and fully support the great work they do for people with a learning disability in the local area. We are grateful to West Dorset Mencap for choosing the service as a beneficiary."

West Dorset Mencap holds a number of fundraising and social events. Visit westdorsetmencap.org.uk for more information.
