From market stall to high street shop: Success for South Street Sally

By Lottie Welch 6th Jan 2021

It's been a difficult year for businesses, so it amazing when new businesses are growing and thriving.

Introducing South Street Sally, a new pre-loved clothing shop on Bridport's high street that has opened its doors.

Owner Sally Townsend has opened her first shop after starting off on Bridport market when she moved back to the area from France.

She said: "We bought a little house on South Street and looked out saw the market going on, so we took a table and plonked it outside with some stuff on, right outside the house.

"Everybody was really jealous because I kept popping in, going to the loo and making a cup of coffee, and our daughter, who was living with us at the time, brought us bacon sandwiches out. And when we were finished, we just carried it back into the house.

"Sadly, Duncan, who was running this shop [Bridport Antique Rugs] died and I know the landlord, who saw me shivering outside Symonds and Sampsons and he said, 'do you fancy a shop'? and that as it - the rest is history."

Sally worked for three weeks to be able to open the shop.

"We renovated the fireplace and exposed the large fireplace at the back. We've opened it up to its original state," she added.

"We worked at it solidly for three weeks."

The response to South Street Sally has been brilliant with people being really supportive.

Sally said: "Lots of people are aware of the environment and unnecessary landfill. They want to come in and buy good quality clothes at affordable prices.

"It's all unique, you're not walking into a shop and there are rows and rows of the same thing in different sizes. You can go along the racks and find a little Burberry hidden away.

"People are really aware, and it fits into the Bridport ethic, of recycling and it's also massively hip to wear preloved clothes."

As well as pre-loved clothing, accessories and gifts, Sally also sells copies of her book, 'Last Tango in Carcassonne'.

Unfortunately, the latest lockdown means shops are closed, but Sally is operating a safe click and collect service. Visit her Facebook page for more information.

It is well worth a visit as soon as restrictions allow for the shop to reopen. We managed to get in just before Christmas and came away with three items and a copy of Sally's book, which we will update you all on soon.

Sally also has her own heartening and humorous blog, which can be found here.
