A Bridport resident is continuing her fundraising efforts for Weldmar in memory of a good friend.

As well as walking Weldmar Hospicecare's Sahara trek later this year, Kelly Heath is holding a summer raffle to raise as much money as possible.

She said: "A good friend of mine, Mel Ferguson, sadly lost her battle with cancer last year aged only 52. We met at Colfox school. She moved away but we picked up where we left off when she returned to Bridport around six years ago.

"She received outstanding end of life care at Weldmar hospice and they also supported her children and other family members for a number of years during her treatment."

Mel's dad, Pete Dakin, said: "The staff at Weldmar are very special, caring, warm and reassuring. They supported us as a family and took the responsibility of her care off my shoulders. They made her ending as comfortable, pain and stress free as possible. I knew she was in safe hands."

As well as cake sales and raising funds through a Christmas lights display switched on by Doc Martin star Martin Clunes, Kelly is now holding a raffle with some great prizes.

She added: "As Weldmar Hospicecare relies on donations for its funding, I decided to give something back by taking on some fundraising of my own.

"I have signed up to take part in a trek across the Sahara Desert in November of this year, and have agreed to raise funds for Weldmar throughout the year.

"The trek is a big undertaking and I feel quite daunted by it, but I am looking forward to visiting Morocco and I am always up for a challenge."

Local businesses have been very supportive of Kelly's summer raffle and have donated a range of prizes, including the top prize of a stand up paddleboard donated by James of Beyond Events, plus a six month swim membership at Bridport Leisure Centre, a West Bay rib ride, Sunday dinner for two at the Bridport Arms and more.

Tickets cost £1 and are available at Bridport Tourist Information Centre, Bridport Leisure Centre and Harbour Gifts at West Bay.

Kelly will also be selling tickets at Bridport's Co-op store on Saturday, July 9 and on Fisherman's Green, Wets Bay, on Sunday, July 10.

The draw will take place on Friday, July 22.
