Green-fingered residents were able to show off their talents at Bridport Gardening Club's annual spring show, recently held at the United Reform Church Hall.

The show was held slightly earlier than in previous years and, combined with the recent cold weather, this proved a challenge for growers meaning entry numbers were slightly down, but this was more than compensated for by the quality of entries submitted.

Attending the event, the Mayor of Bridport, Cllr Ian Bark, said highlights on the horticulture benches included "stunning daffodils, beautiful hellebores and an amaryllis in absolutely peak condition".

He added: "The growers benches may have been less full than in previous years but this was more than made up for on the maker's bench which was packed with a beautiful range of home made marmalade, jams, chutney and preserves, plus some excellent bread and cakes.

"I took the plunge this year and entered a few things I had made and was stunned to win the marmalade and bread categories. If I can do it anyone can, so have a go and surprise yourself like I did.

"The photography and craft sections were both blessed with some highly creative entries. Some of the close up images of insects were stunning and the Bridport doors category gave viewers an interesting perspective of places the pass by regularly but in all probability never notice."

Prizewinners were as follows: Cheryl Ludgate - best entry in home craft; Kiera Roth - best flower entry; David Fitzjohn - best photograph; Carole Masset - best daffodil; Alan Finch - highest aggregate score for home craft and overall show runner-up; Sibyl Gale - highest aggregate score for horticulture and overall show winner; Sally Lloyd - best flowering plant; Janet Gale - highest aggregate score for art and handicraft.

Bridport Gardening Club is now looking ahead to its autumn show on September 9 and you can find full details at https://www.bridportgardeningclub.co.uk/shows/
