Live music was back in Bridport last Sunday, raising hundreds of pounds for good causes.

Samantics and Nigel Clatworthy played the first Ropes on the Road gig at the Chapel in the Garden.

The show sold out with an excited, socially distanced crowd, enjoying the chance to see live music and catch up with friends.

The idea for Ropes on the Road came about last year because live music is currently on hold at The Ropemakers. Keith Hatch, Ruthy Ni Connallain and John Baker, the team behind Roped in for Bridport, decided it would be a good idea to head out and bring two of the pub's favourites back for an afternoon of music.

Dubbed 'the poet of our time', Samantics is a one-man wall of sound with his unique blend of live, multi-instrumental spoken word. It is hard-hitting, musical poetry with a sprinkle of hip hop.

Sam was joined by the Plymouth legend that is Nigel Clatworthy for an afternoon of uplifting music for difficult times, and the crowd loved it.

Organiser Keith Hatch said: "The past year has been particularly difficult for live entertainment, the musicians, crew and the venues that put it on. So, we wanted to put on a gig in a space that was safe, had great sound and would raise money for a good cause.

"Everyone had a great time, the musicians found it emotional playing in front of a live audience for the first time in ages, and the crowd responded brilliantly, enjoying the fantastic sound and chance to sit back, have their drinks served to them, and go out to a live gig."

The gig raised £150 for The Chapel in the Garden, whilst a further £87 was donated on the day for the Community Fridge.

The team are already planning a follow up show in the autumn, but in meantime live music returns to The Ropemakers from the beginning of July with a packed programme of events.
