A project to transform Bridport's outdoor skatepark and Plottingham Fields could be completed in stages.

Bridport Town Council's scheme includes replacing the skatepark and play area, have an events stage, new cycle route and hopes for a zip wire.

Town surveyor Daryl Chambers spoke to councillors at a recent finance and general purposes committee about how the project is progressing.

He said: "We're having a rethink on how we do it, whether it be the complete project or do it individually, we're not sure yet.

"We're going to look at a more strategic delivery… bearing in mind funding is very fickle and the overall approach may not be the best approach, it may be better to do it in parts to get to the overall approach.

"We need to look at it now, now funding is starting to open back up… we don't want to let it slip."

As well as the project at Plottingham Fields, a scheme to transform the bus station is also underway, with Dorset Council match funding the town council's £10,000 to provide £20,000 for a feasibility study.

Daryl added: "It will look at whatever possible is on that site and that's so wide range it's unbelievable. That's to redesign the site, put a new central hub with a café and toilets, it's to look at the possibility of delivering housing, delivering parking, coach parking - the whole thing."

Daryl said he had been talking to Simon Williams, former planner at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, who has set up his own business.

Daryl added: "He sent some initial ideas for the site which we're working on to share with you as a proposal to appoint him and more forward, but we're not quite there yet.

"The idea is to look at evert possibility within that site and nothing will be discounted. It's an ambitious scheme.

"There will be full reports coming within the next few months - I do expect all these to start moving."
