A new radio programme hopes to give a voice to those with disabilities in our community.

Anna Golding of No Limit's Bridport, the dance and music project for people with learning disabilities, has come up with the idea of Radio People.

Those with a disability have been encouraged to get in touch with her for any song requests they have in anticipation of the show, which is hoped to be broadcast next month.

Anna said: "I was puzzling over how to stay connected with the people I work with in No Limits.

"Many of these people are highly vulnerable and at high risk to Covid with the majority shielding for almost a year now. I wanted to find a way for everyone to dance and singalong at home, but more importantly, I wanted to give a voice to our disabled community of west Dorset, some of whom have felt increasingly invisible in a world necessarily closing down.

"And so, the idea for a radio programme was born. I am hugely fortunate to have been put in touch with Mick White, a care worker at The Ridgeway Centre in Weymouth and sometime local radio DJ.

"Mick and I have been recording interviews over the last couple of months where people say which song they would like to hear, how it makes them feel and if it reminds them of anything or anyone.

"We will co-host the show along with some of the people we work with and so far, the responses have been wonderful - some funny, others moving, but I think we have both been blown away by how powerful this format could be."

The first programme is scheduled to be Wednesday, February 17 and will be available here

If lockdown is extended, the programme will be postponed to the closest date possible.

There are still a few spaces available for requests, so if you or somebody you know with learning disabilities would like to be featured, email [email protected]
