Walk of the week: A stroll around Allington

We have introduced a walk of the week for our newsletter subscribers to enjoy over the weekend.

Each Friday we will be sharing a circular walk in and around our local area with directions and photos. We use the OS Map app, which is very useful if you are out walking.

This week's walk is around Allington, taking around an hour and is just under 2.4 miles long.

Start at Hospital Lane and walk towards Bridport Community Hospital. Go past the turning for Mead Fields and just before the hospital entrance there is a lane on your right, go down there.

After a while the path joins a field, continue straight and go up the side of it, keeping the field on your left and continue straight into the next field.

Follow the field around at the top to the left and keep following the edge of the field as it turns right then left. While walking along the top there will be a stile to your right, go over it and go to the right, walking along the edge of the field.

At the top of the field, turn right onto the lane. Where the lane meets the road, turn left and cross the road, going down a path into a field just before the house. Walk along the edge of the field and go over the stile just after the metal water trough and continue straight down the edge of that field towards a metal gate. Go through it and into another field.

Again, keep to the left hand side edge of the field and walk up. Go into the next field and turn immediately right, keeping on the edge of the field.

Where it becomes open, continue straight down and go left along the bottom of the field. Go around a small brick structure and there will be a stile on the right near the corner of the field.

Follow the path up the right edge of the field and continue straight along this path. Go through the gate into the field ahead of a housing estate, keeping to the right edge of the field.

At the bottom, go over the stile - it was very wobbly so take extra care - and round to the right with the lane.

When the lane reaches a road, turn left and walk along the pavement before turning right back into Hospital Lane.

We would definitely recommend taking some time to explore Allington Hill and Coopers Wood in Hospital Lane. It is a brilliant green space and volunteers have done a fantastic job to maintain it. It will also be featured in a future walk of the week.

This walk is just a suggestion, you can of course take any different routes you wish to make it more direct or make it longer. Always take extra care where the ground is uneven or wet.
