Walk of the week: Trip to Happy Island

By Lottie Welch

26th Jun 2022 | Local News

This week's walk takes in one of our favourite spots in Bridport - Happy Island.

It's a short loop but enables you to explore Happy Island, take a picnic and have a paddle in the river. It's approximately one mile.

Start on Lee Lane at the junction with the A35 and go down King Charles Way. Keep left and follow the footpath, which will come out onto Stuart Way.

Turn right and when you come out of Stuart Way, cross the road and turn right before taking the next left. At the end of that road there will be a footpath with a gate into a field.

Walk straight through the field following the path, You will go down some steps into Happy Island. Here you can explore, paddle and walk around before you're ready to continue on the loop.

To continue the loop from where you came into Happy Island, turn left to walk alongside the river. Keep going until you get to a left turn and a bridge to your right. Turn left and then immediately turn right to continue along the footpath.

The path will then come out on to Jessopp Avenue. Turn left and keep going until you reach the end of the road and it meets Lee Lane. Turn right to go back to the start.

This walk is just a suggestion, you can of course take any different routes you wish to make it more direct or make it longer. Always take extra care where the ground is uneven or wet.

Please leave gates as you find them - if you opened it, close it.

Please keep dogs on leads around livestock.
