Bridport business of the week: Fee Jeanes Ballet

By Lottie Welch

1st Oct 2021 | Local News

We have introduced a business of the week article, highlighting a local, independent business featured on our local list.

This week it is Fee Jeanes Ballet.

Miss Fee has been offering ballet classes for 15 years and teaching for more than 25.

She said: "I danced at Bernard Gale School of Dancing all my life and I started teaching toddlers about 27 years ago, helping out Mary, Bernard's niece. Then I would go in and teach that class every Thursday. It wasn't until he died 15 years ago and I wanted to carry that little class on."

Fee is now based at Bradpole Comrades Hall and has gone strength to strength, operating over Zoom throughout Covid. After losing a number of pupils during the coronavirus pandemic, she now has 68 pupils.

She added: "It's going incredibly well.

"At one point I thought I had lost it [the school], after all these years.

"So, I thought, why don't I do a silver swan class for older ladies. It sold out overnight.

"It started to pick up - I'm 68 strong - and the oldest pupil is 86. They are loving it.

"We're here to have fun and it's good therapy I think, good for your mental health."

Fee still does classes over Zoom, teaching a little girl who lives in Cleveland, Yorkshire, and started at Bradpole earlier this month.

She said: "Most children bring me flowers or chocolates, one child brings me a bag of dandelions (for her 26 guinea pigs)."

Fee holds classes for all ages and abilities on Wednesdays:

  • Adult class - 12.30pm to 1.30pm
  • Toddlers class (one to three year olds) - 1.45pm to 2.15pm
  • Silver swans - 2.30pm to 3.30pm
  • Age four to six - 4pm to 4.45pm
  • Age seven to nine - 5pm to 5.45pm
  • Age nine and above - 6pm to 6.45pm
  • Senior ballet - 7pm to 7.30pm
