Bridport community pays its respects following the death of two teenagers in nature reserve

By Lottie Welch 28th Jan 2022

There has been an outpouring of sadness and condolences from the Bridport community following the death of two teenagers at a nature reserve.

Police were called on Tuesday morning just after 10am to reports to two people found dead at Bothenhampton Nature Reserve, Wych Hill. The case has since been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

A lady who lives in the area who didn't want to be named said: "I don't think there are words to express the sorrow of two people who have died so young.

"With Bridport being so small you probably know them or know of them.

"It's just so unbelievably sad."

Jim Basker, chairman of Bothenhampton and Walditch Parish Council, said it was a tragic event and wants there to be more support for young people.

"People who I've talked to are shocked and we have great sympathy for the families and our hearts go out to them," he said.

"My feeling is, having lost a son myself, we ought to care more for our young people and emphasise the positive and hopes to make the world a better place.

"I am very keen on making it more positive for the next generation because of all the mess we've made.

"We need to be strong and support our young people."

Bridport mayor, councillor Ian Bark, also paid his respects.

He said: "This awful news is heart-breaking for the whole community and I cannot imagine the pain and grief being felt by family and friends.

"Out of respect to them, I am sure the public and the media will want to avoid all unnecessary speculation and comment at this terribly sad and difficult time. All they need to know right now is that we share their loss and we are thinking of them."

Many people also took to social media to pay their respects and send their condolences to the families.

One user said: "So sorry to hear, God bless them, thoughts with the families and anyone what knew them."

Another added: "Such sad news. Heart breaking for the families."

Dorset Police were called at 10.11am on Tuesday, January 25 to reports of two people, a girl and a man - both in their late teens - having been found dead at Bothenhampton Nature Reserve, Wych Hill.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "There are no suspicious circumstances. Their next of kin have been informed and the coroner notified.

"Dorset Police has made a mandatory referral to the IPOC in line with procedures related to the death or serious injury of an individual, we await further guidance from the IOPC on the matter."
