A Bridport fundraiser is stepping out of her comfort zone and into cold waters to raise money for a mental health charity in the town.

Sandra Jay, a psychotherapist and wellbeing consultant, moved to Bridport in April 2021 and having always worked in the field of wellbeing, she was interested in finding out how Bridport supported its community in the area of mental health during the pandemic.

She said: "I came across the Burrough Harmony Centre who offer a much-needed service to the local people of Bridport. The charity, as most these days, have limited resources yet do an amazing job.

"I met some of the team who struck me as a hugely gifted and dedicated team providing a place of respite, safety and solace and an open door to those who need."

Sandra wanted to do something to support the charity and decided to challenge herself and step outside of her comfort zone by sea swimming between November 1 and February 1, committing to 15 to 20 winter swims.

"I have never been a sea swimmer," she added, "so thought that swimming throughout the winter would be a wonderful way of doing this, so I joined a local group of more experienced swimmers and started acclimatising myself in preparation for the endeavour I had in mind.

"I then made the decision to commit to swim in the open sea throughout the winter period.

"As I began preparing, I was amazed at how good it feels, despite going against every natural instinct I have to stay on the beach and keep warm. I focus, brave the plunge and can honestly say that so far, I have never regretted it.

"I dry myself with an amazing buzz, a proud glow of achievement as I head home for my hot chocolate and warm slippers."
