Bridport Leisure Centre temporarily closed

By Lottie Welch 1st Jun 2021

Bridport Leisure Centre has been temporary closed.

There are reports of travellers on the site and the decision has been made to close it.

A statement published on Bridport Leisure Centre's Facebook page said: "Please note that due to reasons beyond the leisure centre's control, we will be closed until further notice.

"Please continue to monitor our social media and website for further updates.

"We are terribly sorry and we will update you as soon as possible.

"Refunds for any affected sessions will be given as soon as we are able to reopen."

Dorset Police has been contacted.

Town clerk Will Austin, of Bridport Town Council, has said that although the land is not owned by Bridport Town Council, he has contacted the police and Dorset Council to take action due to the impact the closure of the centre and Covid testing facility based there has on the community.

He said: "There is a need to balance the needs of traveller groups with the impact of any unauthorised encampment on the community, but in this case the loss of an important community facility alongside a vital tool in dealing with the pandemic is unacceptable."
