A colourful new series of murals could brighten up the riverside walk by Bridport Football Club.

Town surveyor Daryl Chambers told councillors at a recent town council meeting that following the success of the mural recently painted in St Mary's playing field as part of Bridport Rights Respecting, a similar project for the side wall is now being looked at.

There are 60 panels that make up that wall - which would involve separate mural projects - and Daryl suggested the murals relate to the town after being inspired by a similar idea in Retford.

"They've done a tribute to some of the old businesses around the town, which I thought was a great idea," he said. "It led me to think what we could do in Bridport with some of the ropemaking and stuff like - it will be worth looking at.

"Around the town we've got these interpretation panels which tells you a lot about the town and it's another opportunity to look at things like that and to have them meet up a bit more and look at some of the traditional things that were in Bridport that we've lost that visitors certainly would be interested to know about - make it a bit more interesting.

"The idea of a mural taking you into the town [from the football club car park] is what we've always wanted, but a bit of history about the town on that wall as well would be fantastic."

It's thought that a range of different people will help design it.

Daryl added: "It's a big, blank, horrible wall down there and we're going to talk to different groups about different panels. They don't have to be murals; they can be anything that ties in with Bridport.

"We've had a lot of great feedback from the first one we did… so it just shows you these are the things we should be doing and it does lend the opportunity to lots of different diverse groups."
