Stepping Out is back in action.

The Bridport-based group that encourages people who are recovering from cancer to exercise is back at Bridport Leisure Centre with classes on Mondays and Thursdays.

During lockdown the group met via Zoom, with up to 60 people taking part each week. Now that restrictions have eased those taking part in the classes are able to meet in person in a socially distanced way, and Jo Perfect and Richard Walsh, the instructors, are keen to welcome new members.

If you are interested in joining the Stepping Out classes, or you have a partner who might be interested, you will have to be referred by your GP or your cancer care nurse.

You will then be assessed by Jo or Richard, both of whom are qualified cancer and exercise rehabilitation specialists, before you join an initial 12-week programme. Details of how to obtain a referral and more information about the scheme are available from [email protected].

The classes, open to men and women and all age groups, are adapted to suit an individual's activity levels, cancer diagnosis and treatment, and are free at the point of delivery.

Many who have been through the initial 12 week programme are still attending the sessions years later, as this encourages them to keep exercising and to enjoy the social aspects of the group.

Besides the circuit exercise classes, which start with the Tripudio flow movement that targets the lymphatic system, there is a chance to take part in "taster" sessions. These include Nordic-walking, yoga, bowls, dietary talks, walking football, table-tennis and relaxation.

Stepping Out aims to help participants develop a more active lifestyle, leading to greater independence. The group also provides friendship and support at a time when many people can feel isolated due to their diagnosis.

Stepping Out is free to all participants and is funded by grants and donations, such as the one received from Bridport Co-op Community Fund, for which we are so grateful.
