Bridport's dedicated town surveyor has been recognised with a lifetime achievement award - and asked not to retire as "Bridport could not exist as it is" without him.

Daryl Chambers has been awarded the National Association of British Market Authorities' (NABMA) lifetime achievement award for all he has done for the association, Bridport's market and for helping other councils.

Daryl said: "This award is for everyone involved with Bridport Market and reflects the work gone into making Bridport Market one of the best in the country and how we have reacted post pandemic to get the market back up and running at a level we were before the pandemic hit."

After he was presented with the award, one resident contacted him to say: "Many congratulations, Daryl, on your lifetime award. So very well-deserved for all you achieve and continue to achieve on behalf of the community. I hope you will never retire as Bridport could not exist as it is without you."

Daryl is a founder member of NABMA's buddy scheme and board of directors, as well as being a part of the health check team providing help, support and guidance to many NABMA members, particularly parish, town and community councils.

A spokesman for NABMA said: "Daryl Chambers has been a long-standing supporter of markets and NABMA. With retirement looming, NABMA would like to recognise the service that Daryl has made to markets and our industry both locally and nationally."

The spokesman added: "NABMA has a tremendous ambassador in Daryl as he is passionate about our work, role and influence and freely recommends the benefits of membership at every opportunity that is presented.

"NABMA is grateful to Daryl for his active participation within NABMA that now extends towards two decades and it is right that this service is recognised in the company of his many friends and colleagues."
