Chideock was the star of a BBC One show last night when residents and experts had their say on pollution in the village.

The west Dorset village near Bridport featured on Countryfile on Sunday evening, highlighting its pollution problem.

Chideock was named by Friends of the Earth recently for having the worst NO2 pollution in England. The biggest cause of NO2 pollution is emissions from traffic.

Presenter Tom Heap visited Chideock and said that at its busiest, 20,000 vehicles use the A35 through the village.

He spoke to a resident who believes her asthma is due to all the traffic going through the village and said breathing was much easier during lockdown when traffic was significantly reduced.

He also explained that it is not just nitrogen dioxide damaging our lungs. Tiny particles known as PM 2.5 are released from tyres and brakes when vehicles slow down and because it's so small it can penetrate into the lungs and into the blood stream.

Dr Ben Barrett was interviewed measuring the levels of PM 2.5 and found that the levels could be 13 times more than what it should be.

PM 2.5 can also be caused by burning unseasoned wood or other fuels which create excessive smoke.

Mr Heap also went to talk to Chris Prideaux, who lives between Walditch and Loders. She fells her own fire wood and is 'proud' she knows her wood has been seasoned and is not going to cause pollution.
