From the editor: 'The death of two teenagers is truly shocking'

I grew up in the parish of Bothenhampton and Walditch so I feel the deep sadness of the community.

The death of two teenagers in Bothenhampton Nature Reserve is truly shocking. Local people can't believe it.

One told me: 'There are no words to express the sorrow of two people who have died so young.'

She is right. Any death is sad. But death at such a young age hits a community particularly hard.

I have also been reflecting on the words of the chairman of Bothenhampton and Walditch Parish Council Jim Basker, who has previously lost a son and wants to see more support for young people. My thoughts are very much with you too, Jim.

Bothenhampton Nature Reserve is a popular, peaceful place for locals - and a hidden treasure for visitors.

With beautiful views of West Bay, it is the perfect place for a Sunday afternoon walk. Many who grew up in and around Bridport will have happy memories of the place and its much-loved play area.

But what is a favourite walking route of mine - and many others - has been very sombre and quiet today. I spotted only a single dog-walker under the slate grey sky.

You just don't think something as terrible as that could happen in a beautiful place like this.

My thoughts will be with the families and friends of those two teenagers for a very long time.
