Thousands flocked to the West Bay Showground in Bridport on Thursday to celebrate the best of country life at the annual Melplash Show.

Although the judging of some of the livestock and horse classes started in the rain, it soon cleared and by 10am thousands of visitors had arrived to enjoy a full day of entertainment.

In the main Bradfords show ring and countryside arena, audiences watched horse jumping, dog and duck displays, terrier racing, a parade of hounds and a spectacular show by Moto Stunts which saw a motorcyclist drive through fire.

Children enjoyed getting up close to farm animals entered in the show and were able to get hands-on in the Discover Farming tent.

Meanwhile, some of the best food the region has to offer kept the crowds well-fuelled, while Palmers Brewery offered refreshment at the Melplash Inn pop-up pub.

Crafts, floral art, horticultural entries and vintage cars and tractors were also display.

The day finished with a grand parade of all the award-winning animals and trophy presentations.

After the cups were presented, an award totalling £34,000 was made to 13 young people who were successful this year in applying for the Melplash Agricultural Scholarship, which offers financial help to young people who want to pursue a career in agriculture, horticulture, forestry or similar subjects.

Melplash Agricultural Society chairman, Philip Hardwill, commented: "It was a fantastic day, and we could not have wished for a better one. Everybody I met, without exception, were happy and full of praise.

"It truly was a showcase for local farmers and producers, bringing the whole community together to celebrate our agricultural heritage and giving visitors a real understanding of what their local farmers do.

"Our Discover Farming marquee, where we aim to inspire a new generation, was packed with eager youngsters who through the free activities provided were able to learn more about food, farming and the countryside.

"All the attractions around the Show were well received and as always the spectacular grand parade took centre stage.  I can't thank everyone involved enough for making it once again a very special day."
