Bridport ASCape is looking to support young adults aged 16 to 25

From small beginnings four years ago, Bridport charity ASCape has gone from strength to strength and is now looking to offer support to young adults.

The group started out supporting families with teens affected by autism and social anxiety in and around the Bridport area. During the pandemic, the group stretched its arms around families with children aged seven to 11. The group grew from 25 members to more than 250.

Now, it is looking to embrace young adults aged 16 to 25.

ASCape will be running a monthly support group which is safe, supportive and non-judgmental as the project aims to address the lack of options for purposeful social interaction for Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) young adults with their peers.

Co-lead Karen Wright said: "We know all too well there are many families in the community living in isolation because of ASC, no group is more isolated than our young adults that after leaving school have little or no social interactions. Many suffer depression and other mental health issues as a result."

ASCape hopes that in some small way it can provide an environment where young adults can meet new people, make friends and learn further social skills.

ASCape would love to hear from organisations and individuals that could provide specialist support in talking therapies, advocacy, crisis care, employment and housing support. The group is also looking for three youth workers and applications are welcome.
