We have introduced a business of the week article, highlighting a local, independent business feature on our local list.

This week it is West Bay Discovery Centre.

As well as being a museum with visitors able to find out more about west Bay, it also acts as a Tourist Information Centre so people can find out what's happen in West Bay and what they can do.

Liz Bryant, manager at West Bay Discovery Centre, said: "We cover how storms affect West Bay, historically and currently, we cover the geology side, cliff falls and the Jurassic Coast, we cover the fishing aspect, we've got a section on the residents and what they think of West Bay.

"We've got ship building, which is one of the bits that surprise our visitors most of all because they don't realise the scale of it and the size of the ships they were building.

"There's a bit about tourism and we always have a temporary exhibition. This year it's all about plastics, the issues surrounding that and how it affects the ocean."

West Bay Discovery Centre is also featuring an exhibition with Dorset Wildlife Trust which is about the marine protected area. An artist has created impressions on what the surface under the sea looks

The centre closes at the end of October and reopens around February half term, when there will be a different temporary exhibition.

Liz added: "It's going to be called 'Layers of Time' and it's going to be about the geology of West Bay."

As well as exhibitions within the centre, the team also hosts a range of events.

"Last year we had to cancel all our events and things we do, but we've been bringing them back. We do guided walks, events for kids and adults and we're starting to do talks again, as well as craft workshops for the kids and there will be more of that next year, linking in with the Layers of Time exhibition too."

Next Thursday there is a special guided walk with local historian Elizabeth Gale, who has released a new book, 'West Bay Swimming and more'. Find out more at West Bay Discovery Centre.

The centre was been recognised and won a number of awards, including silver in the South West England Tourism Excellence Awards, gold for new tourism business award in the Dorset Tourism Awards and silver for accessibility in the Dorset Tourism Awards.

West Bay Discovery Centre is open from 11am to 4pm Tuesday to Sunday. For more information, visit westbaydiscoverycentre.org.uk
