Bridport's historic Charter Fair will return this Saturday.

Based in Bucky Doo Square and Bridport Arts Centre, the free programme of events will start with The Big Band at 9.30am before the fair's annual awards are presented by Bridport mayor, councillor Ian Bark, supported by town crier John Collingwood.

The Charter Fair Trophy is awarded for outstanding service to the community, with Bridport Community Hospital being last year's recipients. The 2021 award goes to Bridport Medical Centre.

Arthur Woodgate, chairman of the Charter Fair, said: "Through the darkest of times they offered hope and support and they did so with such thorough professionalism, such calm and considerate kindness, that it has deeply touched the heart of our community."

A second presentation of the 'Above and Beyond' award will be made to David Powell for his work with young people, for supporting and developing the local music scene, and for his efforts to promote the Rights Respecting principles within our community, which is embedded in Bridport Town Council's five year plan.

There will be entertainment in Bucky Doo from Shiraz, Rough Assembly - formerly Tinker's Cuss - Chloe Rainey and the Phoenix Youth Band.

In the arts centre, local organisations will provide information and a selection of goodies - some edible - from 9.30am to 2pm. These include Bridport Choral Society, Bridport Beavers, Bridport Community Shed, Bridport Cohousing, Bridport Young Performers, Bridport Cub Scouts, Friends of Bridport Millennium Green, Burrough Harmony Centre, The Living Tree and West Dorset Friends of the Earth.

More entertainment will be provided on stage in the arts centre by Dan Shakell and Sue Smith, Bridport Choral Society, Mitch Norman and Trumbonium.

Bridport Charter Fair celebrates important historic moments in the town's heritage; the right to hold a market with a charter granted more than 700 years ago by King Henry II, and Bridport's Citizens; Charter, reflecting the principles of 1998 Human Rights Act and confirming Bridport becoming the UK's first Rights Respecting town.

The Charter Fair takes place on Saturday, September 25.
