Keep children entertained this summer with art sessions in West Bay this week.

On Thursday, August 12 and Friday, August 13, West Bay Discovery Centre is inviting young people to Fisherman's Green at The Salt House to help local artist Darrell Wakelam create wall art.

Participants will help create a selection of sea and shore creatures. These will be incorporated into a piece of hanging wall art what will help highlight the problems of marine plastic pollution.

The activity is being run by the discovery centre as part of its 'Turning the Tide' season of displays and activities, which highlight the problems of plastic pollution in our seas and on our beaches.

A spokesman for West Bay Discovery Centre said: "A study by Plymouth University found that around one in every three fish had traces of plastic in it and marine mammals such as dolphins and seals are particularly affected."

Participants don't necessarily have to have artists talents and, subject to availability of places, can drop in to take part for up to 20 minutes at a time, between the hours of 11am and 1pm and 2pm to 3.30pm.

There won't be anything to take home but those taking part will be helping to create a piece of artwork which will be put on display in the centre.

Darrell has been providing art workshops for nearly 30 years in schools, theatres and museums. His work includes 3D sculptures built from scrap materials, using cardboard constructions, collage and painting techniques. His last visit to West Bay attracted 80 participants who created a 3D sailing ship model that is still on display in the discovery centre.
