Bridport FC player gains place in London Marathon for heart-warming reason

By Lottie Welch 6th Jan 2021

A Bridport Football Club player has entered to run the London Marathon in memory of his wife's late sister.

Antony Carlile said he was "honoured" to be accepted for a charity place and has chosen Great Ormand Street, a cause close to his and his wife Amy's hearts.

He said: "The reason I chose Great Ormond Street is to run in memory of Amy's late sister Rachel, who unfortunately passed away from the cruel disease that is meningitis aged 10.

"As head of Year 7 [at Holyrood Academy in Chard], my wife is constantly reminded of the sister she never got to meet, who left us before she was born."

Antony has been busy training, playing with Bridport FC, as well as training using an online guide.

He said: "Alongside the cardio work, I am also supplementing it with strength work designed by local fitness trainer Rich Harvey.

"It means a lot to me to make a difference for a charity that is close to my family's heart and to be able to do something that will push the limit of both my physical and mental resilience."

It was a surprise to Amy that Antony had entered the marathon, or that is was in aid of Great Ormand Street.

Amy said: "I am so incredibly proud of Antony. He didn't tell me that he had entered the ballot for the marathon, so when I found out on Christmas Eve that he not only had a place but that he would be doing it for Great Ormond Street, I was overwhelmed with pride.

"I hope we can raise as much money as possible for the amazing and crucial work that they do."
