Bridport Gig Rowing Club marked a significant milestone on Saturday, with a boat naming and launch event held at Fisherman's Green.

The day was a bustling affair, drawing enthusiastic crowds throughout.

On display were all four of the club's wooden racing gigs, including the highly anticipated new addition, Beacon.

The highlight of the day was the solemn blessing of the new boat, led by the Revernd Phil Ringer. Participants joined in the singing of hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save, a heartfelt tribute to those at sea.

The club was honoured to host Brian Nobbs, the mastermind behind the construction of the gig, as well as Brydian, another one of the club's racing gigs.

Brian was on hand all day, generously sharing his expertise and insights into the creation of this magnificent gig. It was a poignant moment when Brian, accompanied by his granddaughter, took his place in the pilot seat for Beacon's maiden voyage.

The excitement didn't stop there. The new gig made its debut at the Sidmouth regatta the following morning and clinched victory in its inaugural race in the Jurassic League, thanks to the remarkable performance of the women's Supervets crew.

Despite numerous regattas facing cancellation due to inclement weather, the Bridport Club is enjoying a successful racing season, securing an impressive second-place finish overall in this season's Jurassic League, narrowly trailing behind the Poole club.

The day was not only about racing and maritime traditions but also about community and camaraderie. Various engaging activities, including food, drinks, a tombola and the Ergo challenge, collectively raised a remarkable £750 for the club's fundraising efforts.

Moreover, the club proudly announced a generous sponsorship of £1,500 from Palmers Brewery, further fortifying their commitment to promoting the sport and nurturing local talent.
