To add to blossoming trees in St Mary's churchyard and as part of the Queen's Green Canopy, a tree has been planted and blessed by the Rev Deb Smith and parishioners.

The Golden Hornet crab apple was donated by Bridport Tree Planting and was planted after the morning service on Sunday, March 13. It will be part of the tree planting initiative created to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee this year.

Members of the congregation helped install the sapling between the church and church hall and at the Rev Deb Smith's suggestion, people welcomed the tree by clapping. Several had not planted a tree before and helped remove and then replace soil and added root-enhancing powder.

Joe Hackett, co-ordinator of Bridport Tree Planting, said the tree would complement the other two blossoming trees in the churchyard - a flowering plum and a hawthorn.

The group has planted nearly 1,000 trees since the autumn, the third year it has done so, to meet its aims of doubling tree cover and enhancing biodiversity.

"Not the smallest tree we helped plant this season," Joe said of the eight-foot tree. "Most of the saplings we planted of gave away to households were whips not more than two foot high.

"This one is tall and slender and maybe four or five years old, but with luck now that it is freed from its pot will spread out well and maybe grow to 20 feet."
