Bridport walk of the week: Meander round Melplash

By Lottie Welch 17th Aug 2021

We have introduced a walk of the week for our newsletter subscribers to enjoy over the weekend.

Each Friday we will be sharing a circular walk in and around our local area with directions and photos. We use the OS Map app, which is very useful if you are out walking.

This week's walk is a 3.2mile route around Melplash, taking around one and a half hours. Some sections of the path were a little difficult as they have not been maintained, but they are passable.

Start at Melplash Village Hall and cross the road over to the Half Moon pub, going down the footpath to the right of it. Continue straight when the path becomes grassy.

Go through the gate and continue straight through the field to a stile and then follow the path through woodland, sticking to the right. When you come to a stile, go over it and go down the right-hand side of the field and over the stile to the right of the gate.

Walk down towards a barn, continuing straight when the path goes round to the right and then following the path round the barn. Just after you pass the barn, turn left at the cattle pen and there will be a stile on your right. It is quite hidden and easily missed and the path looks small and overgrown, but it is passable.

When you get to the end, go over the stile on your right and go down to the road, turning right when you get to it. Continue along the road until you reach a bridleway sign on your right, which also has the Hardy Way emblem and signs for various homes. Go down there.

Continue straight when the road becomes a track and go through the metal gate and continue following the path. At the next gate to a field, go through it and follow the fiant path in the grass just to the left and around the hill.

At the end of the field, go through the gate and turn left to go back on yourself. Follow this path and just after going across a wooden bridge, turn left to go through a grassy field, following the path until you reach a gate.

Continue straight and go over the next stile and walk along the right-hand side of the field and go over the bridge on your right. Continue along the gravel path and turn left at the road. Follow the road round to the left and just as you reach a line of garages there will be a small path in front of you between a wall and hedge.

Follow the gravel path into woodland and when the path comes out next to houses, turn left and then turn right. Turn left when you get to the road.

After a home called 'Southlands' on your left, take the footpath on your left. The path is very narrow and right next to a stream so take extra care. Go over the stile and follow the path, staying left, and down to a stile.

Follow the path in the grass in the next field, keeping left. Go down towards the lake and as you get to the steps there will be two stiles to the right under a tree, go over them a straight through the next field.

Go through the gate at the other end of the field and go straight through the next field, going through a gate on the other side.

When you reach a footpath sign, turn right and follow the path round a lake and to the left. There will be a stile on your right just after, it is a little hidden so keep an eye out.

Go over the stile and straight through the field to a stile on the other side. Go over it and turn right to walk towards the main road.

At the road, cross over and turn left - take care as it is very busy - before turning right at Twinways Lane, following the road round. When the road meets a crossroads, turn right. Continue along this road and it will come out opposite the Half Moon pub and the beginning of the walk.

This walk is just a suggestion, you can of course take any different routes you wish to make it more direct or make it longer. Always take extra care where the ground is uneven or wet.

Please leave gates as you find them - if you opened it, close it.

Please keep dogs on leads around livestock.
