The extremely popular Melplash Show may not be going ahead this year, but farming and the working countryside will still be brought to life for young people.
The Melplash Agricultural Society will be holding a special Discover Farming event aimed at the under 12s at Vurlands Animal Farm, Swyre, on Thursday, August 26.
Society director George Streatfeild said: "We will be building on the success of the Melplash Show's popular Discover Farming marquee - a must visit for all the families who are interested in learning more about food production and farming.
"There will be lots of activities and interactive demonstrations where children of all ages can get hands on experience of a variety of 'farm to food' activities."
Activities on offer will include:
- Driving a radio-controlled tractor around the farm
- Taking a virtual dairy farm tour
- Making and cooking pancakes
- Juicing apples and making smoothies
- Making butter
- Building Charlie's barn
- Having a go at wood spinning
- And even calving a cow
Discover Farming at Vurlands Animal Farm will take place on Thursday, August 26 from 10am to 4pm.
Admission is free to all children under 16 years and costs £2 for adults. Tickets must be booked before attending at
discoverfarming.co.uk
Also on Thursday, August 26, the society is hosting a summer homecrafts and horticulture show with lots of classes for flowers, fruit, vegetables, cookery, preserves, photography, handicrafts and much more.
Show secretary Lucy Hart said: "Although we have slightly reduced the number of classes from a normal show year, there is sure to be a class for everyone.
"The show will take place at West Bay on our show field and will be open to exhibitors only. Sadly, we will not be allowing the general public to come and view the exhibits this year, but we will take plenty of photographs and publish the results on our website as soon as they are available.
"Exhibitors can stage their entries either the evening before the show or on show morning. We will then close the marquee for judging and exhibitors will be welcomed back in the afternoon to see if they have been awarded prizes."

Entries for the homecrafts classes close on Thursday, August 19 and the horticulture classes close on Monday, August 23. All entries must be made online.
