Bridport's Baboo Gelato can now be enjoyed at the company's new cafe in Swanage
A Bridport-based gelato business has expanded and is now offering its delicious ice cream to the other side of Dorset.
Baboo has opened a new café in the seaside town of Swanage, which will build on the offerings from its kiosks in West Bay, Lyme Regis, Morcombelake and Weymouth on its mission to make ice cream fun.
The company, run by Sam and Annie Hanbury, officially opened the café on Saturday after a customer called the couple offering equipment as she was closing her business. Instead, they snapped up the chance to rent the site.
Sam said: "Swanage is a lovely town that has been slightly left behind by time, but is really coming alive at the moment. There are quite a few cool brands here - Chococo, which I think is a great company - and great businesses are being set up, so we thought it would be an interesting idea.
"One of the things we wanted was to go ice cream plus - things like milkshakes and sundaes. We're all about trying to make ice cream fun and there's only so much fun you can have with a cone, but once you have a sundae, milkshake or one of our croffles, you can have a lot of fun."
It is a 19-seat café and the team will also be offering savoury items too.
Sam added: "One of the things that is very important to us wherever we go is to be very, very local. We're opposite The Purbeck Deli, so we buy stuff from them, and we buy our bread from Haymans Bakery, buying milk from Swanage Dairy, so we're trying to link in to the community. We're also getting kimchi from our friends at Bowlcut.
"We've got toasties - we've never done that before - and I think you can make a toastie that's one of the most delicious things to eat in the world, and we're doing cocktails with a bit of an ice cream theme - it's all exciting.
The café will be open 9am to 6pm every day.
Baboo's sites in Swanage, West Bay and Lyme Regis will be giving all proceeds on Sunday, March 13 to the Disasters Emergency Committee's Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal to help people fleeing from the country.
