Bridport's most historic event, the Charter Fair, is set to go ahead later this year.

The free event, taking place on Saturday, September 25 celebrates the gaining of the charter, granted by King Henry III in 1253 and will include live music and a variety of stalls.

The usual eclectic mix of entertainment will again be offered to the public, both in Bucky Doo Square and on the arts centre stage. From the brass instruments of the Trombonium Quartet to the acoustic guitar of Mitch Norman, the folksy Rough Assembly - previously Tinkers Cuss - to the Phoenix Youth Band, Dan Shakell's saxophone with Sue Smith on the piano to the massed voices of the Bridport Choral Society.

A spokesman for Bridport Charter Fair organising committee thanked the arts centre for its support and encouragement and said: "By that time its exciting new piazza-style forecourt café area should be up and running, adding a new dimension to the event."

Unusually, the auditorium will not be packed to bursting point with as many stalls as possible, but a wide variety of local charitable organisations will be represented in a safe environment.

The market charter allows Bridport to hold weekly markets, a right re-confirmed by Elizabeth I in 1554.

The market, described locally as 'the heart of Bridport', has helped shaped the town's character over the centuries - a heritage worth remembering and celebrating.

The organisers look forward to the support of Bridport in celebrating the development of our community and the diversity of its interests and activities.
