Transition Town Bridport and Seeding Our Future host two climate forums

Bridport's businesses are committed to making the town greener.

More than 40 local organisations attended two Climate Forums in Bridport, with the aim to explore how to get more local households actively involved in climate change responses, and how voluntary organisations can help with this.

The forums were set up by two local environmental groups, Seeding our Future and Transition Town Bridport, with help from Bridport Town Council.

Alan Heeks, of Seeding our Future, said: "We were delighted by the turnout, by the quality of ideas generated, and by the willingness of these organisations to involve their members in climate responses."

Bridport mayor, Ian Bark, opened both meetings. He highlighted how Bridport's strong sense of community and voluntary groups have helped us face the pandemic, but added: "Now we have another emergency that we need to prepare for. The climate crisis is real and accelerating, and will affect us in many ways, but there are plenty of practical steps we can all take to reduce its impact."

Some of the outcomes from the forums included:

ï¨ A wider view of climate responses that not only includes reducing emissions and preparing for emergencies like floods, but also include habitat restoration, mental wellbeing, and food security

ï¨ A desire to involve young people in advising on how we respond to the crisis, and in communicating this, e.g. via social media

ï¨ Support for a single online hub to help share information about the many local initiatives already underway

ï¨ Recognition that a stronger volunteer network and coordination between local organisations will help future resilience
