A Bridport charity will help enable children to design and create Bridport Leisure Centre's first outdoor mural.

Now well into its summer camp, the leisure centre welcomes local artists Jo Burlington, of Oops Wow!, who is providing workshops for the children taking part. And a further development will be the creation of this mural, designed by the children.

Jo said: "I will get them to do a portrait of themselves doing something at the leisure centre, and chat about how they feel about the centre while they work. `conversations while making art are always so rich."

Funding to make the mural possible has come from the Brit Valley Rotary Club and the Bridport Young Persons' Action Trust (BYPAT) charity.

"We at the Rotary Club of Brit Valley are only too happy to help with a local project that enhances children's creativity," said the club's president, Adrian Scadding.

The leisure centre is holding its summer camp for five days a week throughout the school holidays, with a variety of activities on offer.

As part of its policy to make facilities accessible and affordable, particularly in such difficult times, the centre has ensured that a number of free places have been filled by children in receipt of free school dinners, with hot meals also being provided each day at the camp. The centre has received HAF (holiday activity and food) funding from Dorset Council to make this possible.

Will Thrower, manager at Bridport Leisure Centre, said: "We've been overwhelmed by the demand for funded spaces.

"We're extremely pleased to be working in partnership with Dorset Council in delivering the summer sports camp program, and to be breaking down barriers to accessing our services.

"We are also delighted to be working collaboratively to make a difference this summer for the young Bridport community. Or thanks to BYPAT, the Aspire Project and Brit Valley Rotary Club."
