Prime Minister Boris Johnson announces another national lockdown

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced stricter restrictions for England as the country moves into a national lockdown.

In a televised announcement tonight (Monday) the PM said that residents must stay at home and only leave to shop for essentials, for exercise, to get medical supplies and have a Covid test, work if you cannot work from home or to escape domestic abuse.

Primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities must close, returning to remote learning and only opening for children of key workers or the vulnerable. Exams are also likely to be disrupted again this year.

Children will continue to get free school meals while schools are closed.

Residents should follow the new lockdown rules immediately and it is hoped schools could reopen after the February half term with areas returning to tiers.
