A book exploring the ancient fishing traditions of Chesil Beach will be launched at an event in Lyme Regis.

The Friends of Lyme Regis Museum will host writer Sarah Acton and heritage boat builder Gail McGarva, in conversation about the ancient traditions of seining communities in Dorset.

Sarah and Gail will discuss this traditional fishing method and the lerret – a wooden fishing boat used along Chesil Beach – at 'Seining Along Chesil' on Monday, January 16 at the Woodmead Halls, Lyme Regis, starting at 2.30pm.

Sarah will also be giving readings from her new book on the subject, in which Gail also contributed as co-writer, and the pair will be sharing their observations and photos from their respective projects and research, with questions encouraged from the audience.

Sarah Acton is a poet, oral history writer and community theatre writer. She writes with a focus on connection to nature, seasons and place.

She is the writer and co-founder of the Heart of Stone community play project on Portland, supported by Arts Council England, and poet on the Your Seasons of Story project through Stepping into Nature and Dorset AONB.

Gail McGarva is a traditional wooden boat builder. Her specialist area is the building of replicas, or as she prefers to call them 'daughter boats', breathing life into a new generation of traditional boats.

Gail integrates her work as a traditional boat builder with her work as a speaker and workshop facilitator, bringing to life the stories all boats have to tell about their communities and their shores.

Signed copies of Sarah's new book will be available to buy at the talk or can be found online at www.littletoller.co.uk/shop/books/little-toller/seining-along-chesil-by-sarah-acton

Entrance costs £2 for members of the Friends of Lyme Regis Museum and £4 for visitors. Card payments accepted.
