A bus fare cap introduced on services across the country, including in West Dorset, has been welcomed by passengers and local MP Chris Loder.

The government has provided up to £60million to help bus operators across the country to cap single adult fares at £2 per journey between January and March 31.

This includes several services across West Dorset, including First Bus services.

The fare cap has been introduced to help those reliant on public transport with the rising cost of living and could save passengers more than £3 per single bus ticket.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: "Buses are by far and away the most used form of public transport, so ensuring that almost all bus journeys are no more than £2 will assist passengers over the winter months and provide direct help to thousands of households across the country.

"This £60 million boost will mean everyone can affordably get to work, education, the shops and doctor's appointments.

"We know people will be feeling the pressure of rising costs this winter, and so we have been working hard this summer to provide practical concrete help that will lower daily expenditure."

The fare cap has been welcomed by West Dorset MP Chris Loder, who said: "I have worked hard since my election to safeguard our vital bus service network here in West Dorset, and I am pleased that the new £2 bus fare cap is including West Dorset service providers like First.

"This will mean those who use services like the X53 or Number 6 will benefit from a considerable reduction in their fares – and I encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of this offer."

Mr Loder also hoped the fare cap will increase bus usage in West Dorset.

He added: "This is a good step in the right direction for encouraging more frequent bus use from local people, safeguarding the existing services we have, and an opportunity for all to make the case for additional service improvements.

"I encourage everyone to make the most of this opportunity."
