Concerns drivers will park in West Bay's George Street to avoid paying the new parking charges have been raised by residents.

Bridport town clerk, Will Austin, spoke to members of the town council's planning committee at an online meeting about residents asking for permits.

He said: "Amongst the issues we raised at a meeting with Dorset Council was specific concerns from residents in George Street in West Bay really worried about the all-day charge of £8 will result in people choosing not to pay that fee and going to park, if they can, in George Street at the expense of local residents.

"The request was for a residents' parking scheme. I'm not convinced they are going to get that because it's such a limited area and the costs involved, but we perhaps could raise this with Dorset Council and say 'what can you do to help those local residents with that particular issue?'."

It was also raised that this could be an issue for residents of Meadowlands, although many living there have off road parking, but there would still be concerns.

Mr Austin said they should ask Dorset Council if they can mitigate the impact.

Councillor Kelvin Clayton said: "I've got a great deal of sympathy with residents down there… I think we should support that."

New charges came into force at West Bay car parks on April 1, with prices rising from £2 to park all day, to £8.
